Synopsis
The second edition of The Renal Drug Handbook is a fantastic publication. Each of us needs to be wary of prescribing for renal patients and this handbook provides a highly practical, user-friendly method of ensuring that appropriate prescriptions are given to patients, whether they have normal renal function, renal impairment, transplants or are receiving renal replacement therapy. In addition, the authors give very helpful information on pharmacokinetics and common indications for the use of each drug described. This information is not available in any other single textbook. It is an invaluable resource for all healthcare professionals but particularly for those involved in the care of renal patients. A copy of the first edition can be found chained to notes trolleys in all of the wards where renal patients are cared for in my hospital. This second edition is even more comprehensive’

Synopsis
Individuals with renal disease require continuing support and care throughout their lives from renal nurses and other members of the inter-professional renal team. Advanced Renal Care is for all those who work in nephrology, dialysis and transplantation as it addresses current challenges in caring for those with renal failure, and examines recent trends and likely future developments. The book also explores key issues in staff recruitment and development. It goes beyond the basic texts on renal care by discussing topical issues such as anaemia management, care of older people on dialysis, diabetes and renal failure, infection control and sexual dysfunction in renal disease.

Synopsis
The thoroughly revised and updated Third Edition of this popular handbook provides practical and accessible information on all aspects of dialysis. The section on hemodialysis features expanded chapters on physiologic principles, acute hemodialysis, urea kinetic modeling, and vascular access, while the section on peritoneal dialysis has been extensively reworked by a new editor and now includes two new chapters. Clinical discussions include frequent references to the USA's National Kidney Foundation's Dialysis Outcomes Quality Initiative (DOQI) guidelines. Each chapter provides references to relevant Web sites

Review
This new edition of a supposedly authoritative handbook on dialysis is spoilt for a British audience (at least) in the opening chapters by gross factual inaccuracies concerning renal replacement therapy in the UK (patients over the age of 65 ARE offered unhindered access to dialysis by nephrologists). This major blemish significantly affects the perception of the rest of the book, which is a shame since it has previously stood as an important working handbook for nephrologists around the world. The rest of the content is certainly comprehensive, and covers most aspects of dialytic therapies. However, the writing is often inappropriately detailed, frequently turgid, the page appearance too dense, and the layout hinders rather than aids understanding and rapid perusal. The new Oxford Handbook of Dialysis is a welcome competitor, and is certainly much more user-friendly, comprehensive, and more inclusive of a nursing readership in addition to doctors.

Synopsis
Recent years have witnessed significant progress in both the scientific basis and clinical practice of renal medicine. Recent advances range from the elucidation of the molecular aetiology of certain primary renal diseases, to the routine use of recombinant human erythropoietin for the treatment of the anaemia of renal failure. Despite such progress, many important questions remain unanswered. How adequate is the current provision of renal replacement therapy in the UK? Are recent trends towards high flux, short duration haemodialysis justifiable by risk-benefit analysis? The volume analyzes several developments in the science and clinical practice of nephrology, and highlights the areas in which research and the advancement of knowledge continue.
